Author Guidelines
Submission policy
Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis.
Articles are received and acknowledged, usually within one week.
Articles are then reviewed by editors, usually within one month. Essays are considered for publication as received, which means that when an essay arrives it will be reviewed by the editors. If deemed publishable, an editor will be assigned to it and begin the process by making any suggestions for improvement.
If the language is a problem the essay will be returned with the proviso that it will be reconsidered after a native speaker reviews it. Otherwise when the revised essay is returned and the editor is satisfied that it could be reviewed, step 4 will be initiated.
If the essay’s language and content have the potential to be published, it is sent to two referees who are scholars in the field for blind evaluation. Each essay will be sent without any identifying name or academic affiliation to two scholars in the field. This double blind review usually takes up to six weeks.
Referees’ evaluations are sent to the author with accompanying letter from the editor with the status of the essay. The status usually falls into one of three categories: A. If both blind reviews are positive, then the essay is accepted and tentatively scheduled for publication; B. If both reviews are negative, then the essay is regretfully turned down as not suitable for publication in HJEAS; If the reviews are mixed with one positive and one negative then a third blind review is initiated with either A or B resulting. C. If both reviews are positive but with significant reservations then the essay will be accepted but only after considerable revisions are done. D. Very rarely an essay will be rejected for publication but with a strong proviso that HJEAS would be interested in considering other work by the author.
HJEAS makes every effort to publish essays within 18 months of acceptance and thus far has done so.
Authors must take financial and legal responsibility for obtaining copyright permission for photos, illustrations, images, translations, etc. to be included in their articles.
Please download the HJEAS Style Sheet from the web site. Note that HJEAS uses the MLA parenthetical citation as given in the 7th edition of the MLA Handbook. We do not use footnotes, but Works Cited and content (only) end notes. Also HJEAS uses American punctuation and spelling with which many of you may not be acquainted. While our editorial offices will do language checks, your cooperation in using American punctuation and spelling will be greatly appreciated and the Style Sheet gives several clear examples.
The essay goes to the editor in charge of the issue to prepare it for copy editing.
At the Copy Edit stage and after the Language Editor’s review the author receives proof and has a 10 day deadline to return the proofed essay. At this stage some changes are allowed.
The essay with all changes is now type set by the Production Editor and no further changes are permitted.
All accepted authors must attest in writing that their work is original and has not been previously published in English. The editors review all essays with the help of our plagiarism detector.
Publication and launch of the issue at which point the author receives a copy gratis. The results of the author’s research, when published in HJEAS will be immediately available world-wide through our journal and on ProQuest and EBSCO. Published essay after two years will also be readily available for decades through the HJEAS archive on JSTOR.
HJEAS retains copyright but will give permission for the author to reprint upon request.

Confidentiality, fair editing and peer review
Information concerning a submitted manuscript should only be revealed to the corresponding author, reviewers, editorial board members, or the publisher as is required or otherwise appropriate. Editors and editorial board members will not use unpublished information disclosed in a submitted manuscript for their own research purposes without the authors’ explicit written consent. Editors will recuse themselves from considering manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships/connections with any of the authors, companies, or institutions connected to the papers; instead, they will ask another member of the editorial board to handle the manuscript.
Originality, plagiarism
Authors will submit only entirely original works and will appropriately cite or quote the work and/or words of others. Submitted papers are run through iThenticate, a plagiarism-detection software to identify possible cases.
No simultaneous submissions
Submitting the same paper to more than one journal constitutes unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable. Manuscripts which have been published as copyrighted material elsewhere cannot be submitted. In addition, we do not accept manuscripts under review by another journal.
Copyright
Any contribution accepted for publication by HJEAS is done so with the understanding and under the author’s warranty that it has not been previously published in English in any form, and that it will not be published elsewhere until after it has been published by HJEAS, unless an agreement has been specifically entered into for a joint publication with HJEAS; that the author will be financially responsible for any legal action taken against HJEAS by cause of the author’s contribution; that HJEAS retains the copyright but will permit the author to use the essay in other publications upon written request. HJEAS retains the right to republish the contribution in any issue or reissue of HJEAS in any form, and to reprint it in any anthology sponsored by HJEAS; and that in any subsequent republication of the contribution, the author will acknowledge its first publication in HJEAS.
Author guidelines
All submissions should conform to the 7th edition of the MLA Handbook in all matters of style and use the MLA parenthetical method of citation keyed to a works-cited list. Contributions on history may alternatively employ the latest edition of the Chicago Manual of Style. The HJEAS Style Sheet for Contributors and the HJEAS Book Review Guidelines are available for downloading in Microsoft Word format. All submissions should be uploaded to https://ojs.lib.unideb.hu/hjeas/about/submissions .
All printed correspondence should be sent to the Editor, HJEAS, University of Debrecen, H-4002 Debrecen, Pf. 400.
Materials published in the journal do not necessarily represent the views of its editors or staff.
Review Essays
Generally, Review Essays are assigned by the editor, but suggestions and queries are always welcome. A Review Essay is not a long book review, but rather an extended review occasioned by one or more newly published books that use various sources to discuss a general question or a larger issue of interest to HJEAS readers. Since multiple sources are the norm, citations are expected and should follow the HJEAS Style Sheet for Contributors.
Review Essays should run approximately 4,000 words.
Author's declaration of originality
An Author's Declaration is a mandatory part of a submission.
